About Greg Franko

Greg is 21 years old and a senior at the University of Mary Washington (UMW). He is majoring in Computer Science with a concentration in Computer Information Systems and Business Administration with a concentration in Accounting.

Greg became interested in computers and technology during his freshman year at UMW. Initially, he read numerous books and internet sources to gain a solid understanding of computer hardware and software.

During his sophomore and junior years at the University of Mary Washington, he was introduced to upper-level programming languages, including Java and C++. Soon after, he began to teach himself web standards including XHTML and CSS. In February 2009, he began studying the more advanced web technology DHTML (XHTML, CSS, and Javascript languages all used together) and was immediately interested in creating his very own website.

During the Summer of 2009, Greg continued to learn more while interning for the Vienna Tysons Regional Chamber of Commerce in Vienna, VA. He helped install, maintain, and troubleshoot network attached storage devices and hardware equipment such as routers, printers and fax machines. During July and August 2009, Greg also worked for the University of Mary Washington Information Technology department. He helped the University switch from a Novell networking environment to a Microsoft Active Directory environment.

Greg is continuing his web programming education by becoming familiar with the Javascript framework, JQuery, to gain a solid understanding of creating user-interfaces. He also enjoys using the server-side web language PHP, and creating Java Servlet Pages (JSP) pages with Java. During Spring 2011, he will be learning how to connect his web applications to relational databases, such as mySQL.

He recently completed designing and coding a simple website for Rappahannock Legal Services, a non-profit legal firm. He also worked for the Department of Education as an Information Technology Intern during Summer 2010. Greg is still working part-time for the Department of Education while completing his senior year of college.

Greg hopes that EZ Computing Tips makes it easier for people to enjoy and learn about new and commonly used computer technologies. Enjoy!
